The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology particularly ChatGPT has had a significant impact on the academic world including on cheating behavior among students. This research is motivated by concerns that ChatGPT s ease of access and ability to generate instant text has the potential to erode authenticity and integrity and trigger cheating habits in completing academic assignments. This study aims to explore the influence of ChatGPT use on cheating behavior habits among accounting students. The method used is a qualitative phenomenological approach with data collection through in-depth interviews with accounting students at Malang State University who actively use ChatGPT in academic activities. The results show that students tend to use ChatGPT as the primary or even sole tool for completing assignments avoiding the learning process and copying results without understanding. Academic pressure ease of access and permissive social norms are the main drivers of this cheating behavior. This study recommends the importance of strengthening digital ethics literacy limiting the use of AI technology in academics and increasing oversight and regulation by educational institutions to encourage responsible use and maintain academic integrity.
