Abstract

The Card Strategy Lesson (CSL) is proposed in the teaching of writing not only because of its interactive approach but also due to its potential in enhancing students rsquo emotional engagement in descriptive writing. This collaborative Classroom Action Research investigated how the CSL effectively enhances students emotional engagement in writing descriptive text. Conducted at a junior high school in Ngajum the participants were 32 students from class VII-A. The procedures included the use of 15x10 cm blank topic cards for idea generation and outline development followed by drafting peer feedback revising and publishing. Data was collected through observation sheets questionnaire and scoring rubric. Qualitative data from observations were analyzed using a coding book while quantitative data from questionnaire and scoring rubric were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show that teaching descriptive writing using CSL effectively improved students emotional engagement evidenced by a notable increase in their enjoyment confidence interest and motivation in the writing process. A significant improvement in writing achievement was also observed with 87.5% of the students achieving scores above the minimum passing criteria. These results suggest that CSL is a valuable strategy for enhancing both emotional engagement and academic performance in descriptive writing.
