Abstract

This study aims to explore the perception of Indonesian EFL university students regarding the use of X (formerly Twitter) as a platform for practicing opinion writing in English. It focuses on how students independently use features such as tweets replies and quote-retweets to develop their confidence language awareness and argumentation skills. Using a qualitative case study design data were collected from four students because they met the research criteria of actively using X to write opinions in English without teacher intervention and having used X for more than a year. Participants were recruited through a mutual contact on X who actively posted opinions in English and referred others with similar habits. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews tweet documentation and written reflections. Thematic analysis revealed three main findings. First students gained confidence and motivation to write in English through informal interaction on the platform. Second they became more aware of language use and experimented with vocabulary tone and structure. Third they used digital features on X such as tweet reply and quote-retweet to construct arguments and respond critically to others showing elements of academic writing practice. The results indicate that although the students were not guided by instructors their independent engagement with X supported meaningful writing development. The study suggests that informal digital platforms like X can serve as effective tools to complement formal writing instruction in EFL contexts.
