This research investigates English as a Foreign Language students perceptions of utilizing AI assistants to support pupil rsquo s self-regulated writing. Employing a mixed-method approach involving surveys and semi-structured interviews this research objective is to explore students perceptions of AI writing assistants and how they promote self-regulated writing (e.g. writing planning self-monitoring self-evaluation and motivation) in their academic writing. This study applies explanatory sequential design which begins with collecting the quantitative data followed by a qualitative data to further explain the quantitative results. The research results show that the use of AI writing assistants contributes positively to improving students self-regulated writing across four main dimensions cognitive metacognitive socio-behavioral and motivational regulation. These findings confirm that AI technology serves not only as a technical tool but also as a means of supporting students independence and self-awareness in the academic writing process. The implications of this research can inform educational practice encourage the ethical use of AI in language education and enhance the development of self-regulation for EFL academic writing.
