Abstract

Abstract Speaking English as a foreign language is a challenge for EFL students. Many students experience anxiety when speaking in English even though the students use media such as video blogs. This study aims to investigate the main cause students rsquo speaking anxiety and the strategies students rsquo use to reduce their anxiety when completing video blog assignments in English. This study used quantitative and qualitative approaches with data collection through questionnaires and interviews. The sample of the study consisted of 62 grade XI students at SMAN 1 Gambiran who had completed video blogs assignments in English. The results showed that there were three types of speaking anxiety experienced by EFL students at SMAN 1 Gambiran related to video blogs communication apprehension test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. In addition both internal and external factors influenced speaking anxiety including shyness lack of self-confidence fear of mistakes motivation limited vocabulary lack of preparation grammatical errors and the influence of friends or classmates. The strategies used by students to reduce their speaking anxiety when speaking English in video blogs include preparation relaxation positive thinking classmates and overcoming feelings of resignation.
