Abstract

Mathematics learning in elementary schools plays an important role in developing students rsquo critical thinking and collaborative skills particularly in fraction topics that are abstract and require strong conceptual understanding. Observations at SDN Gadang 1 Malang revealed that students still experience difficulties in solving word problems determining appropriate solution strategies and drawing accurate conclusions. In addition students rsquo collaborative skills in group work have not developed evenly as some students tend to dominate while others remain passive. These conditions indicate the need for an in-depth analysis of students rsquo critical thinking and collaborative skills in mathematics learning on fraction topics. This study aimed to describe students rsquo critical thinking skills in learning fractions based on their levels of collaborative skills describe students rsquo collaborative skills based on their levels of critical thinking skills and identify factors influencing the development of both skills. The study employed a mixed-method approach with a case study design. The research subjects were fourth-grade students and the class teacher of grade IVA at SDN Gadang 1 Malang. Data were collected through critical thinking tests observations of collaborative skills interviews and documentation and analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques with triangulation of methods and sources. The results showed that students rsquo critical thinking skills were categorized into high moderate and low levels with different characteristics. Students with high critical thinking skills were able to fulfill the indicators of interpretation analysis problem-solving strategies and inference comprehensively. Students with moderate critical thinking skills were able to understand problems and organize solution steps but still showed weaknesses in providing logical reasoning and drawing conclusions. Meanwhile students with low critical thinking skills experienced difficulties in determining solution strategies and making appropriate conclusions. In terms of collaborative skills students with high collaborative skills demonstrated active participation in group discussions effective cooperation responsibility for assigned tasks and respect for peers rsquo opinions. Students with moderate collaborative skills showed sufficient involvement in discussions but still required teacher guidance to contribute consistently. Meanwhile students with low collaborative skills tended to be passive lacked confidence in expressing opinions and relied heavily on peers in completing group tasks. The findings also indicated a relationship between critical thinking and collaborative skills where high collaborative skills provided social support that helped students understand concepts although this was not always accompanied by high critical thinking skills. The study concludes that students rsquo critical thinking and collaborative skills are interrelated and play an important role in mathematics learning on fraction topics. The development of both skills is influenced by several factors including teaching strategies problem characteristics group management and individual student characteristics. Therefore teachers are encouraged to design mathematics learning activities that emphasize contextual problem solving structured group discussions and balanced group management to support students rsquo optimal development of critical thinking and collaborative skills.
