p The film A Knight s Tale examines the theme of social mobility within a fictionalized medieval European feudal system. This study adopts a film studies approach to investigate how the strategies employed by actors to portray their characters can provide insight into social status using Pierre Bourdieu rsquo s class theory as a framework. Through a detailed thematic analysis this research explores the representation of social class in the film. The protagonist William Thatcher seeks to ascend from the status of a squire to that of a knight by assuming the identity of Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein. Throughout his journey William strategically uses various forms of cultural social and symbolic capital which enable him to compete in jousting tournaments traditionally reserved for the nobility. This study demonstrates how Bourdieu rsquo s concepts of habitus and economic capital are embodied by William s character highlighting his manipulation of different types of capital to navigate and challenge the rigid hierarchical structure of medieval society. /p
