Statistic is one of the mathematical element that could develop the critical thinking skills. Observation result show that students still do the mistake of solved statistical problem. This research rsquo s purpose is to identify the errors that students with field dependent and field independent cognitive style do when they solve a statistical problem based on Newman rsquo s theory and the reasons. The type of research conducted is descriptive qualitative. The research rsquo s subjects are 12-th grade students from SMA Negeri 4 Malang consist of 2 field dependent students and 2 field independent students. The instruments that used are the GEFT test two questions on statistical problems related to measures of central tendency for grouped data and an interview guide. Students rsquo error analysis is based on the Newman rsquo s steps. The sequence of steps is seen as reading comprehension transformation process skill and encoding. The result show that the most mistake that students from those two cognitive style do are comprehension error transformation error and encoding error. Field dependent made mistakes cause they use the old concept that are not relevant for processing the new information and the difficulty to organize the information. Field independent are made mistakes cause they tend to use internal references that sometimes is not accurate.
