Plagiarism continues to be an emerging concern in academia. The variety of plagiarism types has also increased alongside technological advancement. This study aimed to investigate the students' understanding of plagiarism concept including its definition and types and to explore the types of plagiarism that students have experienced in academic writing. A mixed-method approach was used involving data collection from 35 students who completed the questionnaire and follow-up interviews with five purposefully selected students. The results indicated that the students had only a basic understanding of plagiarism concept. Although they understood the general definition of plagiarism their knowledge of its various types was insufficient. Mosaic plagiarism and inadequate paraphrasing were identified as the most common types of plagiarism committed by students. Additionally the study found that students were driven to plagiarize due to insufficient academic writing skills time constraints and lecturers' reluctance to check for plagiarism in students' assignments. These findings are expected to assist the faculty in designing effective interventions to increase students awareness of plagiarism and to avoid the practices of plagiarism.
