Abstract

p Public spaces should be safe and comfortable places for all people especially women to carry out their activities as they wish. However in reality there are still cases of street harassment occurring on campus. This study aims to explore the social perceptions of women as victims of street harassment in Malang City. The study employs a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach which is used to delve deeper into an individual s life experiences. The number of participants in this study was 8 participants who met the criteria which included (1) Women in Malang City aged between 18-25 years who were victims of street harassment and (2) Experienced all forms of street harassment with moderate to severe intensity in public spaces directly where the victim did not recognize the perpetrator and vice versa. Data was collected through interviews and then analyzed using phenomenological analysis techniques. The findings of this study revealed factors influencing social perception such as victims as active agents normalization of harassment education law enforcement and patriarchal culture. Additionally the process of social perception includes the recency effect nonverbal cues illusory correlation and attribution. These factors lead to social perception impacts for victims of street harassment such as excessive fear negative venting rejection of femininity and feelings of impurity. Victims of street harassment hope that their surroundings will support them and stand by their side. /p
