Abstract

p This paper aims to show the explorations of the linguistic landscape of Malang based on the study of the visible linguistic forms on the coffee shop signage in the Klojen district. The main focus of this study is analyzing language in written form visible in signage within Malang city rsquo s public spaces to reveal social practices through linguistic code preferences using Fairclough s (1995) three-dimensional framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The research method used in this study was qualitative and the data were obtained from photographs explicitly taken on front signs. Findings show that the preferred languages in the Klojen district are Indonesian English Chinese and Dutch. It is found then that there are two styles of coffee shops in the district with opposing characteristics Asian and Western nuances. The present study concludes that place and social identity are significant in naming strategies for shop names in Malang especially when it relates to historical heritage. /p
