Abstract

This research explores the use of humor among players in Valorant voice chat. Humor plays an important role in a verbal conversation including in-game voice chat. However the findings that aim to define the use of humor in Valorant voice chat emphasizing the humor classification as well as the player rsquo s reaction to it are relatively limited in previous studies. Therefore this research is conducted to give a better understanding towards the variety of humor and its effect within the scope of Valorant voice chat. This research is also important to reduce the misconception of humor remarks that happen between the speaker and the interlocutor. This research is based on a qualitative approach utilizing the aspect of data observation and description. The data for this research is taken by transcribing a YouTube short video from a known Valorant game streamer - SchrodingerLee. The short video was recorded by SchrodingerLee during his live-stream highlighting the humorous element. Dynel (2009) was used in this research as the groundwork to classify the types of humor. The research found five types of humor in a total of 36 occurrences and five types of player reactions in a total of 41 occurrences. The research finds out that banter is the most used type of humor due to its versatility in conveying themed conversation. It can also be concluded that most of the players are passionate about the humor around the community of Valorant.
