Abstract

p Several research has been conducted to investigate in-depth incidental vocabulary acquisition using various methods and media. In this digital age it is important to know the relationship between digital platforms such as social media and incidental English vocabulary acquisition because most of the world s population has accessed the internet and become active social media users. In this study 186 responses were collected from students of different faculties at Universitas Negeri Malang to answer important questions related to the use of social media in incidental English vocabulary acquisition. Then 14 selected respondents were further interviewed to learn more about the vocabulary acquisition process. The results indicate that social media is useful in incidental vocabulary acquisition where the vocabulary acquired comes from repeated written exposure in social media. The vocabulary obtained is then grouped based on the formation of words which resulted in 3 borrowed words 13 compounding 4 blending 9 clipping 49 acronyms 12 conversion 55 derivations 9 coinage 1 neologism 8 variation and 3 onomatopoeic words. Furthermore the selected respondents showed various degrees of word understanding after being asked using vocabulary knowledge measurements from Nation rsquo s theory. /p
