English is an international language used to communicate between countries around the world. Nowadays learning English is essential because it enables us to communicate more effectively with a larger population. In Indonesian schools English is taught as a foreign language and is now a required subject. In the age of globalization teaching English in schools aims to help students become proficient in English according to the Ministry of Education and Culture’ s Decree No. 060/U/1993 and the 1989 Constitution on the National Education System (Rachmajanti 2008). Mastery of foreign language skills requires sustained and disciplined effort. To become proficient in a foreign language there are two aspects to take into consideration. The first aspect is both teachers amp 39 and students amp 39 self- learning environments. The second is the method by which students acquire knowledge on their own without assistance from teachers (Hikmah amp amp Emzir 2013). These two important elements have a relationship with one another in terms of teaching English. Thus if teachers and students are to reach the objective of English competence these two elements are necessary. This study examined teachers’ challenges and strategies in teaching English at the senior high school level at Darullughah Islamic Boarding School in Probolinggo. This study amp 39 s methodology was qualitative since it responded to the study amp 39 s objectives and research questions. Its main goals were to understand social phenomena and to give research subjects amp 39 thoughts and feelings a voice. Qualitative research is distinguished by adaptable naturalistic techniques of data collecting and typically does not rely heavily on standardized instruments (Lodico 2010). This qualitative case study is an approach to investigate a phenomenon within its context by utilizing a variety of data sources. This ensures that the issue is examined through a variety of lenses rather than a single one revealing and comprehending multiple aspects of the phenomenon (Baxter amp amp Jack 2008). Creswell (2014) describes a case study as a qualitative method that entails examining an issue through one or more cases over time employing thorough and extensive data collection from various sources (Mukminin et al. 2015). To address the research problem the researcher employed thematic analysis to examine the observation and interview data. Thematic analysis is the process of finding examining and summarizing themes in data according to Braun and Clark (2006). Six common steps are described by Braun and Clark (2006) as follows (1) the researcher needs to be familiar with the entire body of data (2) generate codes (3) search for themes (4) review themes (5) define and name themes and (6) produce the report. Through comprehensive data collection and analysis it is found that the EFL teachers faced five challenges and strategies in teaching English at Darullughah Wal Karomah Islamic Boarding School. 1. The teacher could not control the classroom and manage time. English teachers frequently encounter difficulties when the classroom environment is disrupted due to student behavior that impedes the learning process. A common issue is that students often feel drowsy and fall asleep during lessons. 2. The teacher could not increase the student’ s motivation. The teacher explained that the demanding schedule of activities at the Islamic boarding school has led students to undervalue English lessons. Many students perceive English as unimportant and believe they can achieve good grades without practicing it daily. Additionally students feel overwhelmed by having to learn two languages as they are also required to learn and practice Arabic. 3. The teacher could not choose the appropriate method and material. The English teacher relied heavily on student worksheets (LKS) as the primary teaching tool. This reliance resulted in a monotonous and uninspired learning environment where students were mostly engaged in filling out worksheets rather than participating in interactive and meaningful language activities. 4. The teacher facing a lack of supporting facilities. Facilities in this Islamic Boarding School became issues and challenges for the teacher of English in teaching. Teachers may have inadequate access to essential teaching materials such as textbooks audiovisual aids and technology making it difficult to create engaging and interactive lessons. 5. Students amp 39 educational background the students’ English skills were very different even though they were in the same class. It can be seen when the teacher explained about the material they were going to study most of the students felt they had never studied the material before it can be seen from the way the students respond to the teacher. They felt confused and did not understand what the teacher had explained. Therefore besides the challenges that have been found several strategies revealed in this study. The teacher overcame challenges through self-discipline employing courteous language and fostering enthusiasm. Emphasizing enthusiasm was deemed crucial in the teaching process as it played a significant role in cultivating a favorable and enjoyable learning atmosphere. The teacher addressed challenges through personalized approaches increased individual attention and innovative teaching methods. The teacher employed unique strategies tailored to students amp 39 diverse characteristics particularly focusing on those with lower academic abilities to boost motivation. The school should provide facilities and learning resources completely to create a robust and engaging learning environment that supports all students. Comprehensive English teaching resources include a well- stocked library with a diverse range of books from classic literature to contemporary works catering to various reading levels and interests.
