Abstract

p As Bilingualism and Multilingualism become widespread in Indonesia Foreign languages such as English may be increasingly influenced by phonological transfer. These effects may depend upon the speaker rsquo s regional accent gender and linguistic background. This study investigates the impact of those factors on the production of English consonants among Javanese learners of English in East Java. We seek to find the form of phonological interference between Javanese and English then reclassify the results based on the distinctiveness of the Javanese accent. The data were elicited from 18 English Language and Literature Study Program students at Universitas Negeri Malang. A qualitative research design was utilized in this study. The data in this study were from audio recording amp interviews. This study also used Praat software to analyze the data. The findings indicate that the students tend to make phonological transfers when pronouncing consonants /w p d t k g v eth w h / in general. This study also revealed that the Javanese accent impacts some of the consonants including the minimal pairs of dental / theta eth / alveolar /t d/ and velar /k g/ male participants lead in this transfer. /p
