Abstract

The Indonesian presidential election in 2019 attracts tremendous attention from society. Many considered this event the most well-known election due to its lsquo chaos rsquo especially on social media. Internet users discussed the issue in so many creative ways. One of which is employing memes. It is apparent since people were flooding the social media with memes as a part of political participation on any occasion e.g. debate amongst the candidate campaign and election. This study aims to reveal how political culture is developed during the 2019 Indonesian Presidential Election while taking into account the existence of memes as a part of political participation. This research analyzes the linguistic modes in the memes e.g. picture text color and symbol in order to prove that memes do represent political culture in Indonesia. This study utilizes a descriptive and qualitative approach with Critical Multimodal Discourse Analysis from Kress amp van Leeuwen (2006). The data collection is conducted using documentation and a literature study. It is apparent that political culture is evident in the memes by showcasing the imagery of each candidate through numerous events around the time the presidential election occurred in the form of memes.
