SUMMARY Nurmala Rhima Holida. 2022. Developing Speaking E-Book A Supplementary Material for Teaching Recount Text to tenth Graders. Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching of Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd (2) Francisca Maria Ivone M.A. Ph.D. Keywords Speaking E-Book Supplementary Material Recount Text Teaching English in Indonesia especially in the tenth grade of Senior High School emphasizes on using the communicative approach. This means that learning and teaching are mainly focused on meaning but not on neglecting the form. However in reality some schools have not implemented this yet. Thus a preliminary study was done to identify English classes learning and teaching processes and problems. Results from students rsquo online questionnaires and teacher interviews show some problems students and teachers encounter in class. From the students rsquo perspective they like English subject. Hence from the result of the students rsquo questionnaire 70% agreed that speaking is the most difficult skill compared to the other skills. In addition 60% of students thought that recount text is the most difficult text type to learn in tenth grade compared to two other text types descriptive and narrative text. Based on their responses it can be concluded that they need additional materials which present local recount text that is served interestingly. Meanwhile there are five problems from the teachers rsquo perspective. The problems are 1) teaching speaking problems (students are not mastering vocabulary mispronounced anxiety and low motivated) 2) classroom activities did not arouse students to speak 3) the materials used are limited 4) the assessment still cannot be used to asses students rsquo speaking performance and 5) the media used are limited. Further based on some media checking there was a gap between the books used by the students which is the absence of a listening part and other sources that can be used to stimulate speaking. Considering those findings this study aimed to develop speaking e-books as supplementary material for teaching recount text in tenth grade by adapting Borg and Gall s Research and Development model (1996). The product was developed through seven stages 1) need analysis 2) planning 3) product development 4) expert validation 5) try out 6) revision and 7) product finalization. There were two expert validators the materials validator validated the content while the media validator validated the practicability design and appearance of the e-book. In addition the e-book was tried out to both teachers and students. The results from the process of validation and try out were very good. It means that according to the expert of material development and media teachers and students the e-book was ready to be used yet still needed a little revision. The revised e-book can be used as supplementary material to teach recount text especially for speaking activity after some revisions. This e-book presents audio materials that can be used to know the stress and pronunciation of some words and to show spoken recount text. It is completed with communicative tasks which can stimulate students to speak more it is designed in an interactive way meaning students can do a certain task and then gain a score and explanation to bring a new learning experience. Moreover based on the product development process some recommendations are addressed to some parties for teachers to use this book as supplementary materials. For further researchers they can apply the approach used in this study to different levels of education and lesson. In addition further researchers are also suggested to register for Kotobee Author premium so that the product that will be developed in the future becomes more sophisticated.
