Abstract

Questions in a test can be categorized into 2 kinds HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) and LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skill). HOTS is an ability to think more critically in solving problems while LOTS is an ability to identify information. HOTS is a skill that students need to possess in this 21st century. Providing students with a textbook that promotes HOTS exercises can help them improve their critical thinking skills. This study aims to find out the manifestation of HOTS and LOTS in listening speaking reading and writing exercises in an English textbook entitled ldquo English for Nusantara rdquo for Grade VII. This study is carried out using the qualitative method with a content analysis design. This study uses the Revised Bloom rsquo s Taxonomy framework which has six cognitive dimensions remember understand apply analyze evaluate and create. The first three levels belong to LOTS and the rest belong to HOTS. The finding shows that the four English skill exercises in the textbook are still dominated by LOTS with 81% of the exercises in the form of instructions and 89% in the form of questions. Thus it is recommended that the next textbook authors provide more HOTS exercises in the textbook.
