Howl s Moving Castle is one of the films by Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli that is famous and won national and international awards. This movie even won the Nebula Award for best script in 2007. This research studies only what Howl needs to reach self-actualization and learning what he goes through to meet his needs based on Maslow s hierarchy of needs. This study used formalist film theory that emphasizes the analysis of how intrinsic elements in the film connect and build up together to present the main theme of the film-narrative. This study also combines Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs theory and camera movements. The analysis showed that Howl had to fulfill the physiological safety love and belonging and esteem needs to reach self-actualization.
