Abstract

Key Words structural ambiguity headline news Jakarta Post Human beings use language as an instrument to communicate with others. There are two types of language that they use which are spoken language and written language. In written language the written documents are used to deliver the messages to the readers. There are many sentences in written documents that are potentially structurally ambiguous so that the readers sometimes get confused in determining the meaning. Therefore the writer conducts this study to investigate types of structurally ambiguous phrases that cause sentences in the Headline news of the Jakarta Post Newspaper become potentially structurally ambiguous and how those structurally ambiguous phrases are resolved. This research uses the qualitative-descriptive design since this research is conducted to describe the structurally ambiguous phrases. As her data the writer collects the articles in the Headline news of the Jakarta Post newspaper for a month from October 1st 2011 to October 31st 2011. In analyzing the data the writer uses tree diagram. Through the findings the writer finds 19 phrases in 16 articles that cause the sentences are potentially structurally ambiguous. Out of those structural ambiguous sentences there are two types of structurally ambiguous phrases that occur in the Headline news of the Jakarta Post newspaper which are Noun Phrase (NP) and Prepositional Phrase (PP). The sentences in the Headlines of the Jakarta Post can be potentially structurally ambiguous if they are observed separately from the context. In order to understand the correct meaning of the structurally ambiguous phrases and sentences we should put them into the context of the sentences. However there are some ways that can be used to resolve the structurally ambiguous phrases and sentences. They are adding the hyphen (-) or the preposition (of) between the head and modifier adding the word (which is) or (which are) and (who is) or (who are) to show about something that is being talked about and placing the preposition phrase at the beginning of the sentence in terms to explain where the action took place. Based on the findings some suggestions are addressed to readers students and lecturers of linguistics and further researcher. Readers can use the findings of this study to understand more about structural ambiguity in terms of how they can determine the phrase and sentence which is structurally ambiguous and how they clarify this structurally ambiguous phrase and sentence. Besides students and lecturers of linguistics may be encouraged to take the structural ambiguity as the subject of their studies. The structural ambiguity is one of the interesting phenomena that is very important to research because we often find phrases and sentences that are potentially structurally ambiguous everyday through speech and written documents. Finally the writer suggests that further researchers do more detailed study of structural ambiguity. Besides the further researchers can use this present study as a reference and comparison.
