Key Words writing webbing concept descriptive text pictures action research. Writing may be considered as the most difficult and complicated skill among the four language skills. Nevertheless it should be mastered by Junior High School (JHS) students. According to the questionnaires given to the students in the preliminary study it was found that the major problems they faced were how to generate and develop ideas how to choose appropriate words and how to write sentence grammatically and spelling correctly. The teacher also rarely gave model on how to write descriptive text because writing activities in class were dominated by arranging jumbled sentences jumbled words translating English sentences into Indonesian and translating Indonesian sentences into English language. To overcome the problem Webbing Concept was introduced to be applied in teaching writing. The concept was chosen since it helped the students to generate and develop their ideas. Moreover based on previous studies Webbing Concept was effective to help students in generating developing and organizing their ideas in writing composition. In this research the concept was involved in writing process including prewriting whilst writing and post writing. The main objective of the study is improving seventh graders performance in writing descriptive text by using Webbing Concept. This study used Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted in two cycles. Every cycle consisted of two meetings which covered four stages planning the action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. The researcher at the same time acted as the English teacher during teaching and learning process while the English teacher acted as observer in the class. The subjects were 39 students of VII-D in SMP Negeri 13 Malang in the second semester of 2009/2010 academic year. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires teacher s interview guides observation sheet field notes and students final products. The data gained from the students writing scores were analyzed in terms of content organization and language use by using scoring rubric. The researcher introduced Webbing Concept during the implementation of the action. It was followed by modelling how to make word webs before starting writing how to write the draft how to revise the draft how to edit the draft and how to write the final composition. In addition the students are also assigned to produce a descriptive text through the writing process prewriting drafting revising editing and rewrite the final composition. The result of the research showed that Webbing Concept successfully improved the seventh graders performance in writing descriptive text especially in terms of content organization and language use. The students scores of the students writing compositions improve significantly from preliminary study to Cycle 1 and from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 on content organization and language use. ii The students mean scores on content improved from 22.0 in preliminary study to 25.9 in Cycle 1 and it could reach 28.5 in Cycle 2. In addition the students mean scores on organization improved from 17.9 in preliminary study to 19.7 in Cycle 1 and 21.7 in Cycle 2. On language use the students mean scores also improved from 17.2 in preliminary study to 18.8 in Cycle 1 and 21.2 in Cycle 2. Based on the result of this study it is suggested that the English teachers to use Webbing Concept in teaching descriptive writing and other kinds of text types. Moreover further researchers are suggested to conduct research using Webbing Concept for different text types on different grades and levels of education to see whether the concept was effective to solve the problems of writing or not.
