Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian English Language Education (ELE) students perceptions of authentic listening materials by Indonesian speakers. Employing a survey with 43 ELE students triangulated with interviews involving six participants the research explores student acceptance of these non-native materials considering English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and prevailing native-speaker standards. Findings indicate positive perceptions students believe these materials can enhance listening skills motivation and confidence finding Indonesian accents more comprehensible and familiar than native ones. However considerable hesitation surrounds recommending them for primary classroom use. Students deem these materials beneficial for supplementary practice or for beginners citing easier understanding but not for advanced learning as they prioritize native-speaker models to achieve higher proficiency and meet established academic norms. This study highlights the interplay of perceived usefulness familiarity and entrenched standards in material acceptance. Future experimental research is recommended to objectively measure the impact of such materials on listening comprehension.
