This study is intended to increase the vocabulary retention of the 5th grade students of SDN Taman Satriyan 1 Tirtoyudo Malang. The vocabulary retention was chosen as the focus of the study because vocabulary problem occurred every time English lesson began. English was the most preferred lesson by the students there. However their great enthusiasm was not followed by good achievements. Especially for the 5th grade students in the teaching learning process it is difficult for the students to concentrate. They frequently got bored and they forgot the new words they had learned easily. For those reasons the researcher was interested in increasing the students vocabulary retention by using song. This is because teaching young learners needs different teaching techniques from those used for adult learners. Young learners like to learn by doing. They need teaching techniques which are not boring and monotonous. They need attractive activities that can motivate them to learn the foreign language. The study was an action research with two cycles. Each of which consisted of four stages namely planning implementation observation and reflection. The subjects were the 5th grade students of SDN 1 Taman Satriyan Tirtoyudo Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were oral assessment vocabulary test and field notes. The data about the students progress in vocabulary retention was taken by using oral assessment and vocabulary test The results of this study showed that the use of songs increased the 5th grade students vocabulary retention. First the use of song in English teaching and learning could increase the quality results. The result of oral assessment and scores from the vocabulary test showed that most of the students reached the success criterion of that school. Second the condition or situation of the class became active or live. This was indicated by their positive attitude during the teaching learning process. There are several suggestions that ought to be considered by the teachers when they conduct the teaching and learning English using songs. In choosing the songs the teacher needs to be very selective since not all English songs are suitable for teaching. Teachers should consider the language level. For low-grade classes it is suggested that the teacher use songs which are not too long and which are easy to memorize. In implementing the song activities the teacher needs to ask the students to do some body movements such as clapping hands and standing up because it will make the situation more alive and fun.
