In the era of behaviorism studies on learner language were performed by comparing and contrasting the source and target language (contrastive analysis). The differences between the two languages were predicted to be the cause of L2 learning problems. Contrastive analysis receives criticism since it did not take learner s abilities into account. Error analysis emerged as its substitution and started to use samples of learner language as the objects of analysis to compensate for the setback of contrastive analysis. The product of learning failure was considered as an error that should be treated carefully. In the era of constructivism L2 errors are perceived as the evidence of L2 learning process. Learner language during the process of L2 acquisition is called interlanguage a systematic knowledge of an L2 that is independent of both the target language and the learner s first language (Dullay Burt Krashen 1982 Ellis 1997). Since interlanguage has been acquired as a language it certainly has its systematic patterns of linguistic systems. Therefore the researcher feels that it is necessary to conduct a study that reveals the forms of the interlanguage variations of Indonesian EFL learners in written communication. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The purposes of the study are to investigate the types of interlanguage variations of Indonesian EFL learners in written communication and describe the causes of the variations. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The study employed a qualitative cross-sectional method. The subjects were selected using purposive random sampling technique. There were two-hundred sophomores from five universities in Malang East Java forty students from each of the universities. Data were collected by asking the students to do writing assignments and by interviewing the students. The subjects essays were analyzed in order to find out the interlanguage variations made by the subject. Then the interlanguage variations were classified using two taxonomies description linguistic and surface strategy (Dullay Burt Krashen 1982). Finally each type of the interlanguage variations was tallied to reveal the frequency of each type of them. Furthermore the interlanguage variations were then analyzed to investigate the causes of the interlanguage variations more particularly to describe their linguistic causes (L1 interference overgeneralization and simplification). Meanwhile the interview was conducted to probe information about the causes of the interlanguage variations produced by the subjects. The data obtained through interview functioned as supplementary data about the causes of the interlanguage variations of Indonesian EFL learners which had also been obtained through the analysis of the students essays. An interview guide was employed to aid the researcher in conducting the students interviews. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The findings show that (1) based on linguistic strategy there are twenty types of the interlanguage variations found in the subjects essays namely interlanguage variation in past tense verb formation noun formation plurality present tense articles modal pronoun prepositions diction adjective formation passive voice subject omission relative clause quantifier verb formation for the third person singular direct translation auxiliary present perfect and future tense (2) based on surface strategy there are twelve types of the interlanguage variations namely omission of grammatical morpheme double marking regularization archiform random alternation misordering zero tense marking overuse of modal misconception of have misconception of article usage borrowing-word misconception and past-tense inappropriateness. The last six types of interlanguage variations are the new findings revealed in the study (3) The causes of the interlanguage variations can be divided into linguistic causes namely overgeneralization simplification L1 interference and borrowing-word formation meanwhile non-linguistic causes are carelessness and grammar instructions. 12288 12288 12288 12288 Based on the findings it can be concluded that 1) based on linguistic strategy interlanguage variations in past tense is the most frequently occurred type of interlanguage with the percentage of 31.08% 2) regularization the use of wrong morpheme or structure is the most frequent type of the Indonesian EFL learners interlanguage variation with the percentage of 18.2% seeing from surface strategy 3) grammar instruction in Indonesia which still applies rote-memorization of formula without making further discussions about some exceptions English has influenced the production of new types of interlanguage variations that have yet been discussed previously namely zero-tense marking misconception of have misconception of article usage and past tense inappropriateness 4) Borrowing-word misconception is a new cause of interlanguage variations that have yet been discussed in previous research. 12288 12288 12288 12288 Based on the conclusions the researcher suggests that language teachers should teach conduct communicative activities that provide opportunities for students to use grammatical concepts instead of giving explanation of grammatical concepts. In addition the researcher recommends that policy makers should issue regulations which state that students need and condition should be the basis of arranging and sequencing materials for teaching grammar. Finally for future researchers the findings function as reference and guidelines for further related research about interlanguage. Thus the researcher encourages them to conduct studies related to new findings of the present study which related to the Indonesian EFL learners interlanguage variations and their causes. 12288 12288 12288 12288
