Abstract

Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Arwijati W. Murdibjono M.Pd. DipTESL (II) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A Key words Supplementary materials workbook i-tutor.net i-tutor.net is one of the English courses in Malang which uses Multimedia in teaching and learning process. Endorsed by the ASEAN (e-ASEAN Endorsed Project-ASEAN Task Force) i-tutor.net has been structured according to Singapore s IT 2000 Master Plan (i-tutor.net 2005). Its content follows closely the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) syllabus. Unfortunately there are some problems related to the teaching materials especially the current textbook level. It means that the existing textbook seems to fail to suit the students need and interest. High level of vocabulary lack of exercises especially for productive skills lack of colorful pictures and poor layout characterize the textbook level 1. Therefore the study is aimed to produce workbook which consists of tasks and exercises to improve students English skills based on communicative approach. In order to solve the problems stated above Research and Development (R D) was used in this study to produce materials in the form of a workbook for i-tutor.net students level 1. The procedures of R D were 1) need analysis and reference study to gather information about students need dealing with instructional materials from the field of the study and study relevant documents 2) materials development in which the materials were adopted adapted and organized based on the current textbook level 1 3) expert validation to assess the tentative product in terms of its content and design 4) first revision to revise the developed workbook based on the experts validation 5) limited field testing that was conducted in order to have students comments on the developed materials identify students difficulty and improve the instructional materials 6) second revision to revise the developed workbook based on the limited field testing result and 7) the improved materials (workbook level 1) are the final product. The judgment of content/product development expert and practitioner expert (i-tutor.net teacher) showed that the workbook was categorized as good. However in terms of level of difficulty type of exercises layout punctuation it should be revised. The result of field testing for two chapters (chapter 5 6) indicated that the workbook was very good but some activities needed to be modified based on the students feedback. Therefore based the result of expert validation and limited field testing researcher revised the activities instruction layout and punctuation to make the workbook legible used by the students. Based on the result of the research several suggestions are offered as the following. First the developed materials can be used as source of teaching and learning at i-tutor.net English Course Malang because it was developed based on the students needs interest and problems and was validated and tried out. Second it is necessary for the researcher or other people who are interested in the product to try-out all the chapters in the workbook to get the information about the strengths and weakness of each chapter based on the user of the book. Another point is that there could be an effort to improve the workbook by involving more English teachers in the study programs in order to obtain more inputs for its improvement. Finally it is suggested for the future researcher particularly in the area of material development that this research can be used as one of the references for developing materials especially materials for young learners.
