D Keywords syllabus development English literature senior high school English Literature was one of the compulsory subjects in the Language Department in senior high schools. For other departments namely Natural and Social Sciences Departments English Literature was taught as an elective subject. As far as the researcher could reach the lesson was not well delivered to the students yet because the syllabus and materials for this course had not been appropriately developed. In fact the teaching of the English Literature varied from one teacher to another and many things had not been done yet to improve the syllabus. As we know syllabus was a crucial element in teaching. So far the teaching and learning process of English Literature as an elective subject in SMAN 5 Malang had not been based on a specific syllabus that could guide the teachers to apply the same teaching standards. Therefore it was essential to design a syllabus suitable for the teaching of English Literature as an elective subject for the non-language department students in SMAN 5 Malang. This study aimed at developing a syllabus of English Literature as an elective subject for the tenth-grade students of non-language departments. The development work included formulating objectives to be accomplished identifying English language skills to be mastered by students designing instructional materials to be used and describing evaluation methods to be applied. This research development (R D) was conducted through the following steps (1) needs survey and analysis (2) description of purpose (3) selection and development of syllabus (4) production of proto-syllabus (5) expert validation (6) revision (7) production of pedagogical syllabus (8) field-testing (9) evaluation and (10) final product. The final product of this study was a syllabus for English Literature as an elective subject developed to bridge the gap between what was expected i.e. a successful English Literature lesson and what was actually happened (i.e. the unavailability of the English Literature syllabus). The results of expert validation and field testing indicated that the product was appropriate and fit the students interests and needs. The quality of the product had been assured by experts who had knowledge and experiences related to the product development. This study offered practical significance. The result of this study provided a useful contribution to SMAN 5 Malang in the form of syllabus. The developed syllabus was intended to facilitate and provide a guideline for the teaching of English Literature which could meet the students needs and learning goals. This study might be used as reference for developing a syllabus for foreign language teaching particularly EFL.
