Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Teaching the State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Arwijati Murdibjono M.Pd Dip.TESL. (2) Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. Keywords speaking skills the mingle game. The result of preliminary study that the researcher carried out toward the seventh grade students of MTsUmmulQuroBantaranProbolinggo showed that the students average score was 58 for the speaking English skills. It is twelve points lower than the minimum mastery score which is set up by the school i.e. 70. Therefore this study was designed to improve the students speaking skills through the use of the mingle game. This study employed a classroom action research which was conducted collaboratively with a fellow English teacher in carrying out the cyclical procedure of the study planning implementing observing and reflecting on the action. It was carried out in two cycles in which each cycle encompassed two meetings. Through the implementation of the action the students were supposed to reach predetermined criteria of success namely (1)the students scores of speaking ability are greater than or equal to 70 of the range from 0 to 100 achieved by atleast 75% of the students of the class (2)all of the students are actively involved in the learning process and (3) 75% or more of the students have positive attittude toward the implementation of the mingle game. The data were collected through speaking tests observation checklist a set of questionnaires and field notes. The findings of the study revealed that the use of the mingle game successfully improved the students speaking skills. 90% of the students got equal and/or more than 70. Besides the use of the mingle game increased the students involvement. All of the students demonstrated active involvement in the teaching and learning process. Furthermore 97 % of the students had favorable attitude toward the implementation of the mingle game. The students admitted that the mingle game could create joyful learning improve their self-confidence and motivation reduce their embarrassment to practice speaking English facilitate them to work cooperatively and to find ideas about what to say and improve their speaking skills. As this study suggests the mingle game is effectively implemented through the following procedures (1) eliciting the students background knowledge of the topic (2) giving a model of text (3) inviting the students to discuss the typical structure of particular spoken expressions in a model of text (4) explaining the linguistic features to be used (5) drilling the students with the pronunciation as well as the meaning of the vocabulary items (6) modelling the mingle game activities (7) assigning the students to do the mingle gamewhile the teacher monitor the students activities (8) asking the students to give individual oral report and (9) providing feedback on the the students performances. In reference to the result of the study it is recommended that the English teachers apply the mingle game in the teaching of speaking skills especially toward the language class in which the students have low motivation poor proficiency and high degree of anxiety or reluctance.
