Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip.TESL. M.Pd. (II) Prof. Dr. M. Soenardi Djiwandono. Key words speaking ability role-playing technique. The objective of this research is to improve the speaking ability of the eleventh graders of Madrasah Aliyah Al-Islam Kapas Sukomoro Nganjuk through the role-playing technique. Based on the preliminary study the researcher found some problems related to the English instructional activities of the eleventh grade of this school. Those are the students low speaking ability the students low motivation in learning English and the inappropriate teaching techniques used by the teacher. Therefore the researcher is greatly motivated to overcome the problems by implementing role-playing technique in teaching speaking. The researcher employed collaborative classroom action research design in which he was assisted by a collaborative teacher (a colleague) in conducting the study. The research is conducted in a single class that consists of ten students in which all of the students are taken as the subjects of the study. The procedure of the research consists of four main steps planning implementation observation and reflection. To collect the data he uses some instruments i.e. observation sheet of the students involvement field notes questionnaire video recorder and speaking ability test. The findings of this research showed that the students speaking ability was improved from one cycle to the following cycle. This can be seen from the result of each cycle. First the degree of the students involvement throughout the implementation of the strategy achieved 83% measured using observation sheet. Second the students responses measured using questionnaire throughout the implementation of this strategy achieved 70% students who wanted in order this technique could be implemented in the next speaking class. Fourth the students attitude measured using questionnaire throughout the implementation of this strategy achieved 80% of them who felt enthusiastic enough. Fifth based on the pretest result the students speaking scores were improved that 40 % students could reach the minimum acceptable score (criteria of success) and in the posttest result of cycle 1 60 % students could reach the minimum acceptable score. Sixth based on the posttest result of cycle 2 90 % students could reach the minimum acceptable score. The role-playing procedures implemented by the researcher in this study consist of 10 major steps. Those are 1) deciding on the teaching materials 2) asking the students some leading questions related to the topic 3) giving and drilling the examples of the expressions of embarrassment anger and annoyance to the students 4) providing the cloze dialogue 5) organizing the students in pairs 6) giving the example of the dialogue sheets containing those expressions 7) providing the two role-playing cards or cue cards 8) explaining the simulation in the cue cards 9) having the students modify and design the role-playing cards or cue cards to create a short dialogue and 10) having the students perform their own dialogue in pairs. Based on the improvement of the students speaking skill after the implementation of role-playing technique in teaching speaking it is suggested that the English teachers who have similar classroom problems characteristics and situations to the eleventh graders of Madrasah Aliyah Al-Islam Kapas Sukomoro Nganjuk use role-playing technique as an alternative technique to teach speaking skill at SMA/MA level. Eventually a recommendation is also addressed to the future researchers particularly those who are interested in applying the role-playing technique. The future researchers are recommended to prepare a more deliberate and meticulous planning before conducting a similar study in order to gain a more extensive and applicable result of research. There were some obstacles faced by the researcher during the instructional process namely the time allotment and the dictions. First with the time allotment fifteen minutes to modify the simulation in the role-playing cards to create the interpersonal dialogue were too short that the students could not do the task perfectly. Therefore it is suggested that the future researchers give more than fifteen minutes for the students to do that kind of task. Second based on the dictions provided in the materials for example cranky peevish indignant and resentful the students got difficult to identify the dialogue text comprehensively. Therefore it is suggested that the future researchers use the familiar words to the students in order that they can identify the dialogue text comprehensively.
