Thesis English Language Teaching. Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof.H. Ali Saukah MA. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Enny Irawati M.Pd. Key words Reading Comprehension SQ3R Strategy From the preliminary study at MA Al-Anwar Sumenep it was found that the reading comprehension ability of the students was unsatisfactory. The insufficient ability of the students might be caused by several factors. First students have difficulty in understanding organization and general content of the text. Secondly students were not accustomed in doing prediction before reading. Thirdly students were not accustomed in making report and summary after reading the text. The last majority of the students did not actively involve in the discussion during instructional process and they frequently waited for the teachers explanation. These facts were worsened by the teacher who did not employ an appropriate strategy to teach reading. Mostly they utilized conventional teaching strategy in which they still became the center of the teaching learning process and the students became passive because they relied much on the teacher s explanation. Dealing with this condition an appropriate strategy was needed to improve the reading comprehension ability of the students. Accordingly SQ3R is a systematic strategy to help students comprehend text effectively which steps include Survey Question Read Recite and Review which was applied in this study. This study was conducted to improve the reading comprehension ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Al-Anwar Sumenep in the 2010/2011 academic year through SQ3R strategy. The problem was How can SQ3R strategy improve literal and inferential reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students at MA Al-Anwar Sumenep. This study employed a collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher and her collaborator worked together on designing the lesson plans implementing the action observing the effect of the action and reflecting the actions. This study was implemented to 20 students of the eleventh grade. It was conducted in two cycles and each of which consist of three meetings. The instruments to collect the data were observation checklist field notes and a reading comprehension test. The result of this study indicated that using SQ3R strategy can improve the student s reading comprehension ability. The improvement can be seen through the gain and the KKM (65). In cycle I there were 9 students (45%) achieved 10 points greater than their score in the first test while in cycle II there were 15 students (75%) achieved 10 points greater than their score in the first test. Relating to the KKM before implementing SQ3R strategy there were only 8 students (40%) who pas the KKM but after SQ3R strategy was implemented there were 11 students (55 %) who pass the KKM in cycle I while in the cycle II there were 14 students (70%) who pass the KKM. Besides the implementation of SQ3R strategy was also successful in improving the students participation from 63.2% in cycle I up to 85.2 in cycle II. The result of the study also indicated that the appropriate application of SQ3R strategy followed such procedures (1)Survey step which activities are activating the student s prior knowledge listing unfamiliar words and finding their meanings reading the title introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph (2) Question step which activity is formulating questions (3)Read step which activity are reading the text silently and finding the answers of the previously formulated question (4)Recite step which activities are looking for the main idea and the essential point of the text engaging in group discussion and doing report and (5)Review step which activities are reread the text and making summary. Based on the result above it was suggested that the teachers may apply this strategy as one of the many alternatives that can be used in teaching reading and for the future researcher it was recommended to conduct the similar study in other level with different setting subject and other text types to see whether SQ3R strategy is effective to improve the reading comprehension ability. It was also advisable to implement the the action well by preparing applicable lesson plan considering suitable instruction providing good atmosphere in the classroom and socializing the strategy to both the students and the collaborator before it is implemented in the study.
