Abstract

Key words Reading Comprehension Think-Pair-Square The problem of comprehending a text happened in MAN Genukwatu Ngoro Jombang when the researcher conducted a preliminary study by interviewing the English teacher observing the teaching and learning process in the classroom and looking at the score of reading examination of the students. Some problems occurred in the reading class. From the result of the interview and looked out the document it was found that only 4 students pass the minimum passing grade of 65 the teacher rarely organized the students into pairs or group work and the teacher got difficulties in motivating students in classroom activities. From the result of observation it was found that the reading comprehension activity still used an ordinary way the teaching and learning process was dominated by the teacher. Consequently the students were passive during the teaching and learning process and they had low motivation in the reading activities. It was proved by a small number of students who asked questions about the material explained by the teacher looked interested in the material given and got actively involved in the activity. They seem to be shy to respond to the teacher. Moreover some students looked sleepy and bored. Due to the problems found in the preliminary study the researcher chose Think-Pair-Square strategy to be used in her study since this strategy tries to move the students competence in doing cooperative learning from individual (thinking step) pairing and finally working in group. In accordance with the background of study this study aims to improve the students reading comprehension skills of eleventh graders of science department at MAN Genukwatu Ngoro Jombang by implementing Think-Pair-Square strategy. The design of this study is Collaborative Classroom Action Research and conducted at MAN Genukwatu Ngoro Jombang. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade of science department. This study used reading comprehension tests questionnaire observation sheet and field notes as the instruments. Dealing with the students reading comprehension in reading narrative texts the implementation of Think-Pair-Square strategy can help them to comprehend the reading texts. The improvement can be seen from the average score and the percentage of the students who could get at least or more than 15 points gain score. The average score showed a great improvement in the preliminary study was 52 69.61 in Cycle 1 and 74.8 in Cycle 2. Meanwhile the gain score also showed a great improvement from 33.33% (10 students) among 30 students in Cycle 1 to 86.7% (26 Students) among 30 students in Cycle 2 who could get at least or more 15 points gain score. It means that they had met the criteria of success of this study whereas the criteria of success of this study was 85% of students get at least 15 points gain score. In line with that Think-Pair-Square strategy also gives positive impact toward the students participation in the teaching learning process. There were 73.44% students participation in Cycle 1 during the teaching and learning process using Think-Pair-Square strategy. The students participation was increased to 85.94% in Cycle 2. The researcher suggests the other teachers to employ Think-Pair-Square strategy as an alternative strategy in teaching their students. It is also suggested for the principal to provide facilities to improve the teachers teaching quality by making a policy or cooperating with some experts to hold an in service training about teaching methods for the teachers. It is also recommended to the further researchers particularly those who are interested in applying Think-Pair-Square strategy to utilize the outcome of the study as relevant reference for their researches.
