Abstract

ABSTRACT Nurhayati Nunung 2008. Teaching Speaking Using the Talking Circle Technique at the Second Year of MTs MALNU Menes Banten. Thesis English Language Education. The study is designed to improve the students speaking ability through the use of the Talking Circle Technique. The objective of the study is to find out how the talking circle technique can be used to improve the students speaking ability in terms of describing pictures. In the Talking Circle activity the students are divided into small groups. Each group is given a talking stick and a picture. Employing an action research design the researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher in designing lesson plans implementing the action observing or analyzing data and doing reflection. This study was conducted in five cycles. The subjects of this study were students of class VIIIC of MTs MALNU Menes. The instruments were the students self assessment forms observation checklists and field notes. The criteria of success were determined based on the students involvement in the activities during the implementation of the Talking Circle Technique. It was achieved when 50% of the students could ask and answer the questions. Besides it was determined based on the students ability in describing pictures. It was achieved when 50% of the students could produce two sentences for one picture. It was also determined based on the students confidence to speak English. It was achieved when the students reached the enough level on the scale of Likert. The findings showed that with the implementation of the technique the criteria of success were successfully achieved in Cycle 5. There were 55% total of the number of the students who could ask the questions 64% could answer the questions. The students self confidence improved they achieved more than enough level on the scale of Likert and 78.5% could produce two sentences for describing one picture. The findings also showed that the effective procedure of the Talking Circle technique were (1) the teacher explained the rule of the talking circle and gave a modeling (2) the teacher arranged the students into groups (3) each group sat in a circle (4) the teacher gave a talking stick in order to force students to speak (5) the teacher gave a picture to each group. The leader of the group held the picture (6) the members of the group who held a stick had to ask questions to guess the picture. When the picture had been guessed the students described the picture (7) the students passed the stick clockwise to the next member in order to give the same chance for her or him to speak. This procedure was repeated until all participants had an opportunity to ask respond to questions and describe the picture. With the findings it can be concluded at this point that the Talking Circle Technique has been proven to be able to improve the students ability in asking and answering questions strengthen their confidence and improve the students ability in describing pictures. Finally it is suggested that English teachers adopt the Talking Circle Technique in their teaching to improve students speaking ability. It is also suggested that the students of MTs become more active and confident during the Talking Circle implementation. Finally it is suggested that further researchers implementing the Talking Circle Technique be conducted using more respondents with higher level and male students. Conducting researches on the implementation of the Talking Circle Technique focusing on fluency and accuracy and conducting the Talking Circle Technique outside the classroom are also suggested to them.
