Hasil dari studi pendahuluan menyebutkan bahwa mahasiswa semester empat di program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu belum secara penuh aktif dalam proses belajar belum termotivasi dengan baik untuk berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris tidak percaya diri dan tidak lancar ketika berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dan membuat kesalahan didalam tata bahasa pengucapan dan kosa kata. Oleh karena itu peneliti mengusulkan untuk mengimplementasikan teknik gambar sebagai pemicu atau pemandu untuk memecahkan masalah tadi. Penelitian yang bertujuan untuk memperbaiki penampilan bicara mahasiswa dengan menggunakan gambar pada mahasiswa semester 4 program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas sebagai rancangan penelitiannya. Peneliti dan kolaborator bersama sama terlibat dalam tahapan perencanaan implementasi pengamatan dan perefleksian data dari proses belajar mengajar dan hasil bicara mahasiswa. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah satu kelas mahasiswa semester 4 angkatan 2006/2007 yang sedang mengambil matakuliah Speaking IV. Peneliti memilih kelas C dengan jumlah mahasiswa 18 orang sebagai kelas penelitiannya. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam tiga pertemuan untuk setiap siklusnya. Dari analisis proses belajar dan mengajar dan penampilan berbicara mahasiswa di siklus kedua implementasi teknik gambar sebagai panduan ini memberikan hasil yang memuaskan pada perbaikan penampilan berbicara mahasiswa. Dalam hal ini mahasiswa aktif dalam proses belajar mengajar mahasiswa termotivasi dengan baik untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris dan 83% mahasiswa mampu memperbaiki penampilan kepercayaan diri mereka fluensi mereka tatabahasa mereka pengucapan mereka dan kosa kata mereka dengan nilai rata-rata 3.41. Berdasarkan temuan-temuan diatas beberapa kesimpulan disajikan yaitu 1) beberapa langkah yang berhasil sebagai aktifitas belajar mengajar menggunakan teknik gambar. Langkah-langkah tersebut adalah (1) menyuruh mahasiswa untuk duduk dalam kelompok yang terdiri dari tiga orang untuk masing-masing kelompok (2) memberikan kesempatan kepada mahasiswa untuk memilih salah satu topik gambar yang mereka sukai (3) menyuruh mahasiswa untuk menguji gambar/topik dengan menyuruh mahasiswa untuk mengingat-ingat apapun yang berhubungan dengan gambar/topik dan kemudian menyuruh membuat outlines berdasarkan hasil dari kegiatan sebelumnya (4) menunjuk mahasiswa untuk memberikan monolog di depan kelas dan (5) memberikan umpan balik ke mahasiswa dengan memberikan komentar tertulis dalam format penilaian masing-masing mahasiswa dan melakukan pertemuan kecil untuk mahasiswa yang masih mengalami masalah pada penampilan bicara mereka. Lebih jauh lagi 2) teknik gambar sebagai pemandu dan pemicu berbicara ini mempunyai beberapa kelebihan dalam memperbaiki penampilan berbicara mahasiswa yaitu 1) menciptakan pengaruh yang positif pada situasi kelas dan tingkah laku mahasiswa yang menjadikan mahasiswa lebih aktif dan termotivasi untuk berpartisipasi di setiap aktifitas kelas 2) mendorong mahasiswa untuk berbicara lebih bebas 3) mengurangi kesalahan-kesalahan yang dibuat mahasiswa dalam penampilan bicara mereka 4) dan dapat meningkatkan waktu bicara mahasiswa. Akhir kata saran juga diberikan yaitu sebagai berikut (1) disarankan kepada pengajar matakuliah speaking untuk menerapkan teknik gambar ini dalam pengajaran matakuliah Speaking IV dan (2) disarankan kepada para pengajar matakuliah Speaking IV yang lainnya untuk melakukan penelitian yang serupa dengan menggunakan teknik gambar dengan setting dan subjek yang berbeda demi perbaikan penampilan berbicara mahasiswa. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The results of the previous preliminary study mentioned that the fourth semester students at English Department Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu (MUB) were not yet fully active during the teaching and learning process not yet highly motivated to speak in English not confidence and not fluent in speaking English and made errors in grammatical accuracy pronunciation and vocabulary. Therefore the researcher proposed the implementation of pictures cue technique to solve these problems. The research which aimed at improving the students speaking performance by using pictures cue technique for the fourth semester students at English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu employed Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). Both the researcher and his collaborator were involved together in planning implementing observing the action and reflecting the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students speaking product. The subjects of the study were one class of the fourth semester students of English Department in academic year 2006/2007 who took Speaking IV course. The researcher selected class C. It consisted of 18 students. The research was carried out in three meetings for one cycle. From the analysis of the teaching and learning process and the students speaking performance in the second cycle the implementation of the pictures cue technique gives satisfactory results on the improvement of the students speaking performance. In this case the students are active in the teaching and learning process are well-motivated to speak English and 83% of the students are able to improve their confidence fluency grammatical accuracy pronunciation and vocabulary performance with the average grade is 3.41. Based on the above findings some conclusions are presented namely 1) several successful steps for teaching and learning activities using pictures cue are made. The steps are 1) instructing the students to sit in groups in which each group consists of one higher achiever and two lower achiever 2) giving a chance to each student to choose a topic he or she is interested to get pictures 3) assigning each student to examine the pictures by doing brainstorming and outlining activities 4) assigning each student to give monologue and 5) providing feedbacks toward the student s performance in the form of written annotated comments. Moreover doing mini-conference for students who still get low grade in their performance. Further 2) pictures cue technique has some strength in improving the students speaking performance. In this case the pictures cue technique 1) creates positive effect on the atmosphere of the classroom and behaviors of the students that can make the students are more active and motivated to take part in the classroom activity 2) stimulate the students to speak freely 3) can minimize the students speaking performance errors and 4) can maximize students speaking performance time. Finally the suggestions are made (1) it is suggested that the speaking teacher applies the pictures cue technique in the teaching of Speaking IV course and (2) it is suggested to other Speaking teachers to conduct a similar study by using pictures cue with different setting and subjects for the improvement of the students speaking performance.
