The study is aimed at describing the objective condition of the teaching of English at SMP Negeri 6 Malang. The school was chosen as the setting of the study under some considerations. First it has good qualification in terms of achievements graduates and discipline in learning-teaching process. Second the school is one of the favorite schools in East Java and has been recommended as one of National Standard Schools in Indonesia since August 2004. In addition it has obtained the first rank in English Speech Contest for Junior High level conducted at the SMP 3 Malang. The teaching is divided into four phases namely Building Knowledge of Field (BKOF). Modeling of Text (MOT). Joint Construction of Text f JCOT) and Independent Construction of Text (1COT). Two types of test are administered at SMP Negeri 6 Malang namely formative and summative tests. The formative test is conducted in the form of teacher-made tests and daily tests while the summative test is administered in the form of semester test. In addition the formative test is conducted to assess the progress and the effectiveness of the learning-teaching activities while the summative test is conducted to assess the achievement of the instructional objectives.
