Abstract

In learning English in school students face some problems in comprehending some texts in English especially narrative text. This research is aimed at improving students rsquo reading comprehension of reading narrative text by implementing the Story Map strategy. This research was conducted in a state junior high school in a small district of Malang. Classroom Action Research was used in this research. The subject was 21 ninth-grade students. To collect data this research used an observation sheet reading comprehension tests and questionnaires as the instrument. The results of the research show that students rsquo reading comprehension is improved. This can be seen in the results of the reading comprehension tests. In the first cycle 38.10% (8 students) of the students gained a 10-point score improvement. In the second cycle the students who gained a 10-point score improvement were increased to 80.95% (17 students) of the students. The results of the research also show that students think it is easy to comprehend a narrative text using a Story Map strategy. In conclusion the Story Map strategy improves students rsquo reading comprehension of narrative text and helps students to organize their ideas and find detailed information from the narrative text.
