Abstract

Abstract The researcher found listening skills problem especially in student rsquo s listening comprehension while doing the preliminary study in a state junior high school in Malang s small district. This research aims to solve the listening comprehension problem at a state junior high school in Malang s small district by using a bottom-up strategy combined with Indonesian folklore video media to improve junior high school students listening skills. The following research questions were answered by using a classroom action research design. 1) How can a bottom-up strategy combined with Indonesian folklore videos improve students listening comprehension skills 2) How is the student s attitude towards the bottom-up strategy combine with Indonesian folklore videos as a media listening skill Listening comprehension tests were used as data collection including a bottom-up strategy and Indonesian folklore video media. The student consisted of 31 students located in SMPN 1 Pakis who had received narrative text material. The data was collected in two cycles. Before cycle 1 the researcher conducted the preliminary test to know the prior student rsquo s listening ability. Cycle 1 was conducted in two meetings and also cycle 2 was conducted in two meetings. In cycle 1 there were exercise listening comprehension 1 and test after cycle 1. In cycle 2 there were exercise listening comprehension 2 and test after cycle 2. The collected data was analyzed statistically using statistical descriptions by applying percentage calculations and qualitative narratives or field notes that describe the results of the teaching observations. The researcher s findings reveal that the scores of 8C students have improved. In the preliminary test students listening comprehension scores reached 57 68%. Afterward students showed that their listening comprehension scores improved after doing cycle 1 with results of 68 26% and cycle 2 with results of 75 87%. Also the students have a positive attitude towards using a bottom-up strategy and Indonesian folklore videos. It can be concluded that using a bottom-up strategy and audio-visual videos such as Indonesian folklore videos could improve the student s listening skills especially in listening comprehension. Therefore this study recommends for future research to implement this strategy and media listening with a longer application time to see the maximum result.
