Abstract

This research examines primary school teachers beliefs and practices regarding vocabulary learning and teaching strategies focusing on differences between urban and rural settings. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design to provide an in-depth analysis of teachers beliefs and classroom practices. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with four primary school teachers mdash two from urban areas and two from rural areas. Findings revealed a discrepancy between teachers stated beliefs and their actual classroom practices. Urban teachers exhibited more flexibility and used interactive strategies enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. In contrast rural teachers relied more on government-prescribed materials with minimal improvisation resulting in less dynamic classroom interactions. This research contributes to the understanding of how primary school teachers beliefs translate into practice in different educational contexts providing valuable insights for improving vocabulary teaching strategies in both urban and rural primary schools. The results underscore the need for adaptable teaching approaches to bridge the educational gap between urban and rural areas and enhance vocabulary learning outcomes for primary school students.
