This mixed-methods study investigated the speaking problems faced by English Language Education (ELE) students at Universitas Negeri Malang from cohorts 2020-2023. A questionnaire identified common issues from 154 respondents while follow-up interviews explored 9 students real-world experiences. The result revealed students struggle with fear of mistakes pressure to perform well and the urge to use Bahasa Indonesia. Self-confidence was impacted by anxieties surrounding mistakes negative feedback and comparisons with peers. Motivation declines due to a lack of speaking partners limited opportunities and online learning distractions. Qualitative analysis revealed students rsquo speaking problems dominated by fear nervousness and connection issues. Those problems are encountered in both learning settings but differ in severity and the cause of each student. This research highlights the need for educators to understand current student challenges and develop appropriate teaching methods that can foster a more supportive and engaging learning environment.
