Ph.D. Keywords mathematical reasoning critical thinking numeracy The Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) implementation as part of the National Assessment aims to foster students critical thinking skills. One of the competencies measured in AKM is numeracy which includes the cognitive level of reasoning to be tested. Therefore mathematical reasoning and critical thinking are two competencies needed in solving numeracy problems. However preliminary data obtained from school report cards preliminary studies conducted and the recognition of mathematics teachers at the junior high school where the research was conducted showed that students literacy mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills at the junior high school were still relatively low. The result of students rsquo work in solving preliminary study problems shows students failure to interpret the problems refer to relevant information use mathematical concepts and miscalculate. Given the importance of mathematical reasoning and critical thinking as the competencies involved in AKM it is necessary to research how students apply these competencies in solving numeracy problems. Hence this study aims to describe junior high school students rsquo mathematical reasoning and critical thinking in solving numeracy problems. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive type to describe the mathematical reasoning based on Lithner s perspective and the critical thinking of junior high school students in solving numeracy problems. The research was conducted in one of the state junior high schools in Malang City in the odd semester of the academic year 2024/2025 involving grade VIII students. Data collection was carried out by giving numeracy problems with the content of data and uncertainty to students from two different classes with an average of medium and high mathematics ability. The results of student work were analyzed and then categorized into types of mathematical reasoning so that 6 research subjects were selected to be interviewed. The research subjects were selected through purposive sampling which represents the variation of answers in each type of mathematical reasoning. The steps of data analysis include (1) examining the students work and selecting the appropriate ones (2) grouping the work based on the type of mathematical reasoning (3) re-analyzing the students work with adjustments to the interview results and compiling a summary of the pattern of students answers that show certain characteristics (4) organizing data with the formulation of coding (5) describing students mathematical reasoning and critical thinking in solving numeracy problems and (6) drawing conclusions. The results showed variations in mathematical reasoning and the level of critical thinking of students in solving numeracy problems. Based on the characteristics of their work students mathematical reasoning is grouped into 3 main types namely Memorised Reasoning (MR) Algorithmic Reasoning (AR) and those that showed some aspects of Creative Reasoning (CR). However because the creative aspects were not fully met and the strategies used still tended to be algorithm-based the last group was categorized as AR-type. MR-type students have the characteristic of solving problems by relying on memory without understanding the reason. In the MR-type students tend to make conjectures that are not based on in-depth conceptual understanding. It is evidenced by the formulation of conjectures based on memory and only imitating the solution procedures that have been taught without knowing the reasons for their application. Then students in this type perform mathematical manipulation with a calculation process that are not whole-presented explicitly. The students rsquo process in concluding tends to be written instantly. It shows a less analytical and reflective thinking process. The process of analysis evaluation and inference is not always well passed. Meanwhile AR-type students proposed more qualified conjectures because of the more valid formulation process. The logical formulation of conjectures is reflected in the use of algorithms and the provision of supporting evidence. AR-type students can provide justifying arguments based on analysis even though they have not reached the stage of evaluating the most effective approach to solve the problem. In performing mathematical manipulations students with good algorithmic understanding tend to be able to apply the correct solution procedure but do not always show deep critical thinking to evaluate the final result. In some cases students were able to use more efficient strategies to simplify calculations. AR-type students produce conclusions that are not always valid. This is because their evaluation skills still need to be strengthened. However their thinking process tends to be more reflective by considering various solution strategies and being able to provide more logical justifications. 46 out of 60 grade VIII students who participated in the written test were not able to show the results completely and appropriately. It indicates the existence of constraints at the cognitive levels of knowing applying and reasoning in the numeracy AKM component which has different constraints at each level.
