Abstract

The relationship between vocabulary mastery and writing ability is very strong. The higher the level of student vocabulary mastery the higher their writing ability. A low level of writing ability resulting from low vocabulary mastery will cause many problems such as ambiguity and misunderstanding in writing. Schools have certainly tried various things to overcome the problem by implementing many learning techniques and methods one of which is a vocabulary journal conducted by one of the junior high schools in Malang in their two 8th grades. Case study research was used to determine the perceptions of grade 8 students regarding the implementation of vocabulary journals which focused on the impact of increasing vocabulary mastery and writing ability. An online questionnaire was distributed to 53 students from two 8th grades who implemented the vocabulary learning technique Vocabulary Journal via Google Forms which contained 18 statements with 4 Likert scales (strongly disagree disagree agree and strongly agree). All items in the questionnaire are valid at the 0.6 level and highly reliable with a coefficient of 0.948. For more in-depth research interviews were also conducted with 6 selected participants with the provisions of 2 students with the highest grades 2 students with middle grades and 2 students with the lowest grades. The average score of each questionnaire item is then measured to determine positive or negative perceptions ( gt 2 is positive). The research results showed that students responded positively to implementing vocabulary journals to improve vocabulary mastery and writing ability. Thus it can be concluded that a vocabulary journal has a positive impact on improving writing skills and vocabulary mastery. However students seem to have other learning techniques or methods that are more suitable for them.
