Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is one of the models of teaching and learning that are globally used in every subject and known as an effective model to apply for the students to have a better learning experience. However the pandemic has impacted on how the teaching and learning modes from face to face to virtual learning. The needs of finding how the process of the teaching and learning in the new environment are crucial. Moreover the perspectives of the lecturers and students are to be taken into account to find out what is needed to be improved in the English virtual learning when using PjBL model. This descriptive qualitative study is aimed to find how the Project-Based Learning is during English virtual learning what problems and the solutions also expectations and recommendations from both parties lecturers and students. The research was conducted at Institut Agama Islam Negeri Palopo since it was the first time of the university experiencing the practice of Project-Based Learning during English virtual learning. The data were obtained through two instruments the first one are the documents/learning artifacts in the form of lesson plan which the researcher obtained from the lecturers and audio-visual materials (youtube videos tiktok videos and essays on blogspot) which the researcher obtained the links from the lecturers to identify the practice of Project-Based Learning during English virtual learning. In addition the second instrument were interviews that the researcher conducted with the lecturers and the students which were used to get the data that were not revealed through the documents and audio-visual materials. The data were analyzed through three stages which are data reduction data display and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings demonstrated that project-based learning during English virtual learning consist of (a) the planning (b) the implementation learning (c) and the evaluation. Also the problems that were encountered by the lectures and the students are (a) unauthentic of students rsquo works (b) lack of students rsquo activeness (c) unclear instructions (d) limited data and no network and last (e) limited handset and laptop storage. The solution towards the problems that the lecturers and the students faced during English virtual learning when using Project-Based learning are (a) asking the students for the documentation when doing the projects (b) the lecturers checking the google classroom and give the reminder to the students from time to time to finish the projects (c) having an adequate contract in the first meeting of the teaching and learning (d) providing the students and lecturers quota they needed and last (e) giving the students an adequate project according to their capabilities. The lecturers rsquo expectations towards the practice of Project-Based Learning during English virtual learning are to have new experiences in making lesson plan and to use various applications that can be useful in communication. In addition the sudents expectations when they learned using Project-Based Learning during English virtual learning are to have a clear instruction to have not so difficult projects and to engage with educators that are not too strict. The lecturers recommended the use of LMS and make the project-based learning compulsory in schools/campuses. Also the students recommended to remain using paper in spite of the advanced of technology and to use other applications such as Wattpad and Canva. Even though this research was well-done it still has falws as a result of the small subject size and limited instruments. In order to have a thorough study of the uses of the PjBL during English virtual learning it is advised that the following researcher acquire more subjects and invest more time in observing teaching and learning. The researcher also suggested that the following researcher conduct a follow-up study on the transition of online to face to face teaching and learning activites.
