Abstract

The term freelancer refers to people working in a certain field without being affiliated with a certain company or institution. Many occupations allow people to operate independently as freelancers including the teaching profession. Freelancers in teaching commonly take the role of private tutors and their range of students extends from students of early childhood to tertiary education level. Conventionally the practice of freelance tutors takes place at the students rsquo houses. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic all face-to-face interaction must promptly shift to online. In the context of freelance English tutors freelance tutors are likely to receive no assistance during the rapid shift to the online learning environment. By reviewing related literature this study aims to discover the challenges faced by freelance English tutors as well as the solution formulated to cope with the challenges. The two research questions deployed in this study are (1) What are the challenges faced by freelance tutors in teaching English speaking skills online (2) How do freelance tutors overcome the challenges they face in teaching English speaking skills online In this study a qualitative method narrative inquiry was employed. Narrative inquiry informs the design of this investigation as the approach is particularly useful for understanding lived experiences. An interview guideline adapted by Ertmer (2012) and Hidayati (2019) was utilized to unravel VA rsquo s story. The lived experience this research aims to narrate is the challenges faced by VA (pseudonym) a freelance English tutor who had been tutoring since 2018. In early 2020 she temporarily halted her tutoring activities due to safety issues in the middle of COVID-19. In late 2020 she continued her teaching practices with online meeting applications until now. Findings of the current research note that VA rsquo s challenges are limited access to teaching facilities limited training availability limited reliable teaching resources and students rsquo reluctance to speak. To solve the access issue she found that family could be her savior so she did ask favor from her family members. In terms of training freelance tutors rarely receive any training or workshop. In this case VA refers to much content on YouTube. While teaching materials are difficult to find she refers to her students rsquo textbooks homework or modules. When preparing the teaching material herself she prefers the free material available from credible sources. Last but not least when she faced challenges in maintaining her students rsquo participation in speaking she usually gave homework and utilized WhatsApp voice note so the students could talk confidently. This study completes the discussion with recommendations for fellow freelance English tutors educational institutions the government and future researchers. Freelance tutors must initiate action to form an association that provides room for professional development supported by educational institutions and the government. Not only professional development an association can also provide basic standardization of teaching. Last but not least future researchers are recommended to add a larger scale of participants to get a broader picture of such an issue. The narrative inquiry may not apply to larger participants so it is recommended to employ a mixed methods approach and enrich the discussion of freelance English tutors in Indonesia.
