Abstract

SUMMARY Lamarian Martinus Gesiata. 2020. The ELE students rsquo attitude and their achievement in extensive reading. Thesis. English Language Teaching English Department Faculty of Letter State University of Malang Advisors (1) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A (2) Nova Ariani S. Pd M. Ed. Key Words Correlation attitudes extensive reading ELE The intention of this study is to seek out the possible relationship among two variables namely students rsquo attitudes to read and their achievement in extensive reading. The subject of this research are the English Language Teaching Students of state university of Malang who already took the Extensive reading course on their previous semester. The sample taken in this study was using random sampling technique. Among 159 the writer obtained 60 students. The data of this study was taken by questionnaire. There is only one data to be analyzed which the correlation between students rsquo attitudes represents as ldquo X rdquo and students rsquo achievements in extensive reading represent as ldquo Y rdquo . To see the correlation the writer used Pearson Product formula to compute the data. From the data analysis the writer concluded that there was a positive correlation of ELE students rsquo attitudes and their achievement in extensive reading. In other words the higher scores of students rsquo attitudes test the students get the higher achievement of extensive reading the students get. The other result was the students rsquo attitudes towards extensive reading are they enjoy what they are like to read and also every week produce a reading journal about books they have read they also believe their vocabulary writing ability and their ability to read in English gets better and also developed because of extensive reading activity. The majority of the students concur extensive reading is daily activity which supremely important extensive reading personally rewarding and students enjoy this activity because they can choose whatever they are willing to read. Knowing the results of this study it will be good information for lecturers. Hence it will encourage the lecturers to teach extensive reading in the new ways good methods and techniques for making the teaching of extensive reading more effective. By knowing there is a correlation of two variables that are studied students rsquo attitudes and students rsquo achievement in extensive reading. Therefore this study can be a contribution to the future researcher who wants to investigate the same topic by considering the other components of attitude
