Abstract

Key words developing electronic module listening supplementary materials seventh grade students Comprehending the spoken form of the target language is one of the most difficult tasks for the language learners yet it is probably the most neglected skill in teaching English as a second or foreign language as cited by Paulsan and Bruder (1976 in Suparmin 1997 222). It is also difficult to find materials for listening which are suitable with the curriculum in the market. Therefore developing listening materials to help students able to learn listening outside class as the supplementary activities is significant to be conducted. This Research and Development (R D) study is aimed to develop an Electronic Module for Listening as the Supplementary Materials for Seventh Grade Students of Junior High School. The materials are put inside the interactive media compiled into a CD. This study is aimed to provide the listening materials for independent learning of seventh grade students. The materials are chosen based on the curriculum due to the regulation of Education Minister the implementation of education minister number 22 in Curriculum 2006 about content standard in elementary school junior high school and senior high school the school may create their own materials suitable with their students and condition which should be based on the curriculum. This study used the research and development design by Hyland (2003). This R D method consisted of seven steps as follow (1) needs survey (2) developing material (3) experts and teachers validation (4) revision (5) try-out (6) revision and (7) final product. The instruments in needs survey were questionnaire and an interview guide. The data from the students were calculated in percentage and those from the teacher interview were described in a qualitative way. The data from the needs survey were used as the basic consideration of materials development. The validation of the materials and the media were done by the experts of material and media and also English teachers by instruments of validation questionnaire were provided. The results from this questionnaire were used to revise the product before try-out. The data from the experts and teachers were analyzed qualitatively while data from the try-out analyze qualitative and quantitatively. The try-out was conducted twice. The first was small group try-out and the second was large group try-out. The result from the questionnaire given showed that the students like the materials and the activities inside the media. They were interested in operating the materials and the activities inside the media which consisted of audio video and animation. The data obtained from the questionnaire also showed that the materials help to students to improve their achievement in certain topic in listening. The final product was in the form of CD recorded materials and a teacher guide book. The CD contains the materials which can be easily operated by the students. It was combined with interactive media which made it became more attractive. The teacher s guide book contains the explanation of each button used inside the media the material scripts the answer keys and the glossaries. The materials consisted of seven topics of interpersonal and transactional texts for second semester of seventh grade of Junior High School which suitable with the curriculum. The topics are mention as follow asking and giving information asking and offering help asking to borrow and agreeing to lend asking and giving opinions expressing likes and dislikes asking and giving facts and asking and giving clarification.
