Abstract

Key words question types questioning strategies purposes in posing question RSBI. This study is undertaken in order to investigate the questions used by a Biology teacher in SMP RSBI Negeri 1 Tulungagung. In detail this study aims at answering three questions 1) what type of questions does the teacher give to the students 2) what question strategies does the teacher apply in the class and 3) what are the purposes of the teacher in posing the questions The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. It is also a case study because it is aimed at describing special and unique features of a teaching situations or the method used by a particular teacher in a particular setting. The subject of this study was a Biology teacher who taught in the RSBI class namely 7E. The researcher chooses the Biology teacher as the subject of this study since she has good English skill and her experience in teaching Biology longer than other Biology teachers in RSBI program. Besides the Biology teacher applies English and Indonesian as the medium of instruction consistently in her classes. 7E class becomes the observed class because this class has Biology class earlier at 3-4 periods than other classes. The setting of this study was SMP RSBI Negeri 1Tulungagung since the school is the first school which implement RSBI program in Tulungagung. The data were collected from three observations in the class. The instruments used in the study were the researcher observation sheet interview guides and questionnaire. The findings showed that the Biology teacher used 94 questions during the observation. The study found that the subject employed convergent and divergent questions. However the teacher posed convergent questions more frequently than divergent questions. There were 74 questions of convergent level (78.72%) and the rest was divergent questions (21.27%). In addition the study also showed that subject used four question levels based on Bloom s taxonomy. The teacher used 57 knowledge level questions (60.63%) followed by 28 comprehension level questions (29.79%) 5 application level questions (5.32%) and 4 analysis level questions (4.26%). Based on the findings above it can be said that the teacher used low level questions in Biology class. The study also found that the most frequent strategy used by teacher was wait time strategy. The average of total wait time in the class is 8.3 seconds. It indicates that the students need more time to think right after the teacher posed first question. The teacher employed this strategy for 35 times (37.23%). Then followed by redirecting 28 times (29.79%) probing 13 times (13.83%) rephrasing 9 times (9.58%) focusing 5 times (5.32%) and prompting 1 time (1.06%). From the interview the teacher stated that there were some purposes in delivering the questions. The subject mentioned there were three purposes of posing the question to motivate the students to focus on the topic which would be discussed to motivate the students to focus on the discussion and to check the extent of students understanding. Furthermore it was found that the teacher used both English and Indonesian languages as the medium of instruction. However based on the result of the interview the teacher realized that she still got difficulty to use English in explaining the teaching material in class. In conclusion the questions posed by the teacher do not cover all the question levels and the teacher only knows a few purposes of posing questions. However the teacher employs all of questioning strategies with different frequencies in the classroom. Furthermore the teacher applies both English and Indonesian as the medium of instruction in the process of teaching and learning in RSBI program even though many difficulties encountered.
