An Analysis on the Correlation Between Language Learning Strategies and the Grammatical Errors Made by the Third Graders in IX-A Class of SMPK Kolese Santo Yusup II Malang. Thesis. Undergraduate program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisor Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. Keywords language learning strategies grammatical errors. The purposes of the present study are to investigate (1) the correlation between metacognitive strategies used and the grammatical errors made (2) the correlation between cognitive strategies used and the grammatical errors made (3) the correlation between social/affective strategies used with the grammatical errors made and (4) the correlation between language learning strategies used altogether with the grammatical errors made. The population involved in this study was all the 32 students in IX-A class of SMPK Kolese Santo Yusup II Malang in the second semester of 2009/2010 academic year. This study employed a census sampling to obtain the data. Thus all the 32 students were taken as the sample of the study. Then the data were analyzed descriptively by using a quantitative method. In which a correlational analysis is then applied. The computations involved were conducted by using a special program used for statistics called SPSS 15.0 for Windows. The results of the investigation showed that (1) there was no correlation between metacognitive strategies used and the grammatical errors made within the .458 significant value (2) there was no correlation between cognitive strategies used with the grammatical errors made within the .055 significant value (3) there was no correlation between social/affective strategies used with the grammatical errors made within the .743 significant value and (4) there was no correlation between language learning strategies used altogether with the grammatical errors made within the .119 significant value. It was predicted that the existences of other variables such as the frequencies in learning the language the language learning styles the students willingness to learn the language and many other variables influence the grammatical errors but the language learning strategies. There are many theories supporting the significance of language learning strategies to the language proficiency yet this research. However this present study is still able to be used as a reference dealing with grammatical error issue or the significance of language learning strategies.
