Abstract

Key words songs teaching vocabulary young learners Teaching English to young learners especially for Kindergarten students is focused on teaching vocabulary because they are still introduced to new language in which it has not ever been learned before. Because teaching English for young learners is not easy the teachers should have strategies or interesting activities to attract the students in learning English. The use of songs in teaching vocabulary for young learners is an effective way to teach English for young learners because the children can enjoy singing the songs and they are not aware that they are also learning language. Therefore this study is intended to find out the characteristics of songs used by the teachers the way the teachers select the songs and the way the teachers use the songs. It was conducted at PG/TK Laboratory of State University of Malang because PG/TK Laboraturium State University of Malang is one of kindergartens in Malang that administers bilingual class and the teachers of the bilingual classes use songs to teach vocabulary. This study is a descriptive qualitative research because (1) it concerns with context and meaning (2) the researcher works in a natural setting (3) the researcher is the key instrument in collecting data (4) the data are presented descriptively and (5) the data are analyzed inductively. The subjects are four teachers of two classes namely two teachers of A Bilingual Moon and two teachers of A Bilingual Star. In this study the instruments used are observation checklist field note and interview guide for the four teachers. From the findings it can be concluded the characteristics of the songs used in teaching vocabulary were the lyrics of the songs were simple and not too long there was the repetition of the words while singing the songs the vocabulary used in the lyrics was presented in the meaningful context the lyrics were based on the theme in the school curriculum and the rhythm of the songs was fun. The teachers also considered the kriteria of the appropriate songs for their students while they were selecting the songs. The criteria were (1) the vocabulary used in the songs should be based on the theme in the curriculum or related to the students lives (2) the songs should be simple and not too long around 4-5 verses/lines and (3) the rhythm of the songs should be familiar by the students. Meanwhile the teachers had 5 ways to use the songs to teach vocabulary i.e. singing singing songs by doing action singing songs by using chant singing songs as the background of playing games singing songs between lessons or doing assignments and singing songs by using pictures/flashcard/ real objects. Based on the result of this research there are some suggestions offered. For the teachers of Bilingual Classes at PG/TK Laboratory of State University of Malang The teachers are expected to be more creative to create their own songs and they can also use the songs since the songs are appropriate for the students. Besides the teachers are also suggested to find out activities that can be combined with the songs. The teachers can find those activities by reading some books about the teaching of English to young learners for example a book of English for Young Learners which is written by Kasihani K.E. Suyanto. For other teachers who teach young learners in other schools they are suggested to use songs in teaching and learning English. Finally for other researchers who will conduct further studies they are suggested to conduct studies for the effectiveness of using songs in teaching English and the students respond toward English songs not only in kindergarten level but also in higher level such as in elementary secondary or even tertiary level.
