Abstract

Key words teaching English Club extracurricular This study is aimed to describe the English Club activity as an extracurricular activity at SMPN MT Bojonegoro in terms of the aim of conducting English Club as an extracurricular the syllabus the technique the materials the media the assessment the students perception on the English Club and teachers perception on the English Club. The study is in the form of descriptive research. It was conducted in SMPN MT Bojonegoro. The subjects of the research are the students in grade 7th and 8th who join English Club and the teacher as an instructor who is in charge in the English Club. In order to collect the data the researcher used some instruments such as interview guide field note and questionnaires. Qualitative data is chosen to elaborate the activity conducted in English Club the syllabus the materials the media used in English Club the assessment used and how is the perception of both students and teacher toward English Club as an extracurricular. The data were collected from March up to April 2012. Then the research was analyzed by categorizing describing and synthesizing. It was found that there are three sub clubs which are conducted on English Club namely speech storytelling and debate. There was a sole teacher who conducted the English Club and the teacher also developed simple syllabus to wrap the activity on each sub club. The pattern of the English Club was receiving the direction grouping and performance. Working in group was the technique that was mostly used by the teacher. For instance the teacher divided the students into two big groups positive and the negative teams. While the material was not used by the teacher since the teacher asked the students to seek for the proper material. LCD internet and laptop took the main role as the media in English Club activity. The students used the combination of internet and laptop to browse all materials they needed whereas the LCD was utilized to play a movie or video. The teacher gave feedback as an oral assessment every after the students performance. Furthermore the perception from both of the students teacher who is in charge of the English Club and the other English teachers were positive. The establishment of the English Club brought an improvement toward the students. However several things should be considered for the improvement of English Club such as the facilities. The result of the study reveals that the teacher should maintain the meeting strictly so the activity will be conducted without any meeting is canceled. Additional instructor is urgently needed due to the distribution of each sub club. The school has to provide more proper facilities to boost up students enthusiasm.
