Abstract

ABSTRACT Dwiputera Dony 2018. An investigation on Extensive Listening Activities and Listening Strategies done by ELT Student of State University of Malang. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor (1) Dra. Nunung Suryati M.Ed. Ph.D. (II) Anik Nunuk Wulyani M.Pd. Ph.D. Keywords extensive listening extensive listening activities students listening strategies opinions. The purpose of the study is to find out whether ELT students of the English Department of the State University of Malang do extensive listening. This study also finds kind of extensive listening materials that students prefer and listening strategies they use in doing extensive listening activities or listening practice. Moreover this study also gathers students opinions toward extensive listening. This study used the descriptive quantitative survey method as research design. The instrument to collect the data was a questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of multiple choice questions and free answers questions. The subjects were all of freshmen and sophomore in ELT program of the English Department University of Malang who took listening courses. From 225 questionnaires distributed only 152 forms were returned to the researcher. The first result shows that students do extensive listening activities outside class/campus. One hundred thirty-seven respondents from total 152 respondents (90.13%) did extensive listening activities outside class/campus while 15 others (9.9%) did not. Thesecond finding was about extensive listening activities that were done by ELT students.The extensive listening activities were listening to English songs watching and listening to English movies debates speeches and advertisements. From all the extensive listening strategies mentioned above listen to English song and watch and listen to English movies were the extensive listening activities that ELT students preferred to do. Turn to the third finding the listening strategies used by students were repetition taking notes of the difficult words finding the meaning of difficult words in the dictionary making a short summary after listening finding the lyrics on the internet (songs) and watching with subtitles (movies). From listening strategies mentioned students prefer to use repetition for listening practice and finding song lyrics and watching movies with subtitles for extensive listening activities.The last finding is most of 149 students (97%) from total respondents agreed that extensive listening activities are also contributing to their mastery of learning listening. Also out of one hundred and twenty-one students from total respondents (79.61%) agreed that extensive listening becomes subject in their study.
