Abstract

Nowadays it is crucial to provide the appropriate teaching methods to improve students rsquo speaking skills. One of the methods is group discussions in the theory of cooperative learning. This research was conducted to find out the perceptions of EFL students on the use of group discussions and their engagement in the speaking class and what factors influence their engagement in it. The research subjects are 120 undergraduate English Language Education students (2018 to 2021 cohorts) who have taken the ldquo Speaking for General Purposes rdquo course and have implemented group discussions as their learning method. The research design was a survey and used an online questionnaire. The findings showed that the students have positive perceptions of the use of group discussions and their engagement in the speaking class. There are 95.8% of students perceive that group discussions are an interesting learning method that makes them actively engage. The factors that influence students rsquo engagement in group discussions are their relationship with peers and classmates interest and motivation and self-confidence. The researcher recommends future researchers conduct a specific assessment regarding students rsquo speaking improvement and direct observation to know the concept used and the kinds of group discussions whether it is old or the latest paradigm.
