Ph.D. Key Words language learning strategies independent learning profiling direct strategy indirect strategy This study aimed at profiling three independent learners of English and viewed their learning process in terms of their selected learning strategies. The study beginning with the identification of the features of independent EFL learners aimed to see the predisposed characteristic manners of the learners. Then the study was carried out to investigate the strategies these learners employ to approach the performance tasks. There have been a great deal of earlier studies on similar issue however among those studies only a list of learning strategies has become more meaningful since it not only deals with the trategy selected by the learners but also concerns the learning strategies that have long been known as an embedded factor that needs to be considered when invistigating one s learning strategies. The study focuses on interviewing and observing the EFL adult learners at Ma had Ali of the State Islamic University of Malang (MA-SIUM). The study employed a qualitative approach (a case study) in order to explore the phenomena of the Indonesian adult EFL learners strategies that occured in the classroom contexts. There were 24 students in the class most of them were female. Several of them graduated from Boarding schools (pesantren) from the State Islamic Senior High Schools (ISHS) and some from Public Senior High Schools (PSHS). However for the purpose of the study the researcher selected three students to be interviewed. As the main instrument of the study the researcher was equipped with a small mini tape-recorder. The data were simultaneously gathered by means of the interview observation recording and field notes. Based on the above description the discussion about independent learners learning strategies is held. Then it revealed that direct and indirect strategies served as the main language learning strategies which aided the three EFL learners in comprehending the lecture information. They employed those strategies to tackle these learning problems. In direct strategies three learners have selected appropriate strategies that deal with memory cognition and compensation. While metacognitive affective and social strategies are employed by those three independent learners to tackle these learning problems that deal indirectly with the language problems. From the first phase of the study it was found out that the three learners were able to recognize their own learning strategies and the various types of learning strategies used by each learner were also identified. In the next phase the subjects learning strategies were broadly described. From this stage the learning strategies of each learner were identified and deeply investigated by means of three series of interviews. From these series of interviews the data could be well confirmed and more detailed elaborations could be obtained since each series had a different objective to attain. The first interview established the context of the subject s experience. Thus in this interview the whole language learning experience starting from past experience of learning the language through the present when the proficiency has been achieved is captured. The second allows the subjects to reconstruct the details of their experience within the context in which they occured the context in this case was framed within the strategies that have been so far selected and employed by the subjects. Moreover the third encouraged them to reflect on the meaning their experience hold for them. The subjects employed different range of learning strategies. The independent learners of English (a) employ individually rather than in groups learning (b) prefer to combine learning strategies between self-learning and self-taught (c) control their learning by keeping themselves focused when learning task is being done (d) prefer the instructor s-design learning strategies (e) use memorization utilization and guessing and (f) are willing to accomplish the tasks in a certain amount of time. Related to the approach of vocabulary performance task it was found out that the first subject used a total of six strategies for memorizing the list of vocabulary namely mouthing the spelling sounding out the spelling writing the words self-testing writing down the Indonesia definition of the words and deviding up the words based on his association. The second subject used nine strategies namely reading over word list silently spelling words in his mind several times writing down words on paper to memorize them writing down words on paper to self test self-testing each word before memorizing the next using a seemingly spiral pattern by constantly coming back to words she was afraid she might forget deviding words into parts associating words with words she had previously learned and treating letters as symbol. The third subject used four strategies namely repeating the spelling silently sounding out the words he knew associating words with the words previously learned and deviding up the words based on syllables. In short in order to be independent learners three of them do not necessarily use the same strategies but they employ different strategies for being independence. Combining questionnaire interview and classroom observation the study found that the EFL language learners percieved themselves as independent learners in two ways (1) they think of themselves as the ones who have more responsibilities motivation and some other aspects (2) they think of themselve as the ones who have to improve and evaluate their own skills. Thus the discovery leads to a conclusion that whatever the strategies that are employed by the learners it is on the part of the learner to decide. Therefore the success is not due to the strategies but mainly due to the ability of the learners to employ various strategies that are compatible with their learning style.
